Getting Junk Leads From Google Ads? How to Attract Real Customers

Spam forms and unqualified calls waste your time and teach Google the wrong lessons. Here is how to filter them out.

Your campaign reports plenty of leads, but your team says most of them are useless: spam, wrong numbers, people outside your area, or people looking for something you do not sell. Junk leads cost more than wasted time. Every junk lead counted as a conversion teaches Google to find more people just like it.

Why junk leads happen in the first place

  • Bidding optimizes toward any form fill. If every submission counts, Google learns that cheap, easy submissions are success.
  • Broad reach. Performance Max, Display placements and broad match can bring in low-intent or automated traffic.
  • Easy forms. A form with two fields and no checks is easy for bots and for people who are not serious.
  • Unclear offers. Vague ads and pages attract people looking for something else, or for free.

Form, keyword and targeting fixes

Start by making junk harder to submit and less likely to arrive:

  • Add spam protection. Use reCAPTCHA or Turnstile, a hidden honeypot field and server-side validation.
  • Ask one qualifying question. Service needed, postcode, budget range or project timeline. A small amount of friction filters out non-buyers without hurting good leads much.
  • Validate phone and email fields so obviously fake details are rejected.
  • Review search terms. Add negatives for free, cheap, jobs, DIY and services you do not offer.
  • Tighten locations. Use "presence" targeting, not "presence or interest", and exclude areas you do not serve.
  • Check placements. In Performance Max and Display, review where ads appear and exclude poor-quality sites and apps.
  • Be specific in ads. Mention price ranges, minimum job sizes or who the service is for. It reduces volume a little and improves quality a lot.

Teaching Google Ads what a good lead looks like

This is where most of the improvement comes from. Instead of telling Google that every form fill is a success, tell it which leads became real opportunities:

  1. Mark leads in your CRM by quality: qualified, booked, won, junk.
  2. Capture the Google click ID (GCLID) or use enhanced conversions for leads, so each lead can be matched back to the click.
  3. Import qualified leads and sales into Google Ads as offline conversions.
  4. Make the qualified-lead or sale conversion your primary goal, and set raw form fills to secondary.

Bidding then optimizes toward people who look like your real customers. Reported lead volume may fall, but the leads your team actually wants usually rise.

Offline conversion tracking from your CRM

Most CRMs can send this data back to Google Ads, either natively or through automation tools:

  • HubSpot and Salesforce have native Google Ads integrations
  • GoHighLevel, Zoho and Pipedrive can connect through Zapier, Make or webhooks
  • Custom systems can upload conversions through the Google Ads API or scheduled file uploads

Give values to each stage if you can. A booked job worth more than an inquiry, and a closed sale worth more than both, lets Google prioritize the best opportunities.

Fast wins checklist

  • Spam protection on every form
  • One qualifying question added
  • Search terms reviewed and negatives added
  • Location targeting set to presence
  • Junk-heavy placements excluded
  • Qualified leads imported as offline conversions
