AI Max for Search Campaigns: Should You Turn It On?
Google is pushing AI-powered matching and ad creation. Here is when AI Max helps, when it hurts and how to test it safely.

AI Max for Search campaigns is Google's one-click bundle of AI features for standard Search campaigns. It can find new searches your keywords miss and write ad variations on the fly. It can also send budget to searches you would never have chosen. Whether it helps depends on your account, your data and the guardrails you set.
What AI Max changes in a Search campaign
AI Max combines several features that used to be separate:
- Search term matching. Your ads can show for searches beyond your keywords, based on your landing pages, assets and existing keywords. It behaves much like broad match, even on exact and phrase match keywords.
- Text customization. Google generates headlines and descriptions from your website and existing ads, tailored to each search.
- Final URL expansion. Google can send visitors to the page on your site it thinks fits the search best, instead of the URL you chose.
You can switch the text and URL features off separately and add controls for brands and locations.
Who benefits and who should wait
AI Max tends to work better when:
- Conversion tracking is accurate and counts real leads or sales
- The account has steady conversion volume, so bidding has enough data
- Your website covers your services or products clearly, page by page
- You are already using Smart Bidding successfully
It is riskier when:
- Conversions are few, noisy or full of spam leads
- You operate in a regulated industry with strict ad copy rules
- Your website has thin or outdated pages that Google could pull text from
- Your budget is small and every irrelevant click hurts
How to test it without risking your budget
The safest way is a controlled experiment rather than flipping the switch on your main campaign:
- Use the experiments feature to split traffic between the original campaign and a version with AI Max.
- Run it for at least four weeks, or until both sides have a meaningful number of conversions.
- Compare cost per conversion and conversion value, not just volume.
- Read the search terms report for the AI Max side every week.
If cost per lead rises but lead quality improves, look at the leads in your CRM before deciding. If you see clear waste, add negatives and test again before rolling out.
The guardrails to set before you switch it on
- Brand inclusions and exclusions to control which brand searches you appear on
- Location controls so text customization does not mention areas you do not serve
- URL exclusions for pages that should never receive ad traffic, such as careers, blogs or support
- Negative keyword lists at account and campaign level
- Text customization review so you check the assets Google generates
Our verdict
AI Max is not a shortcut around good fundamentals. With clean tracking, a well-structured website and sensible guardrails, it can find valuable searches you would miss. Without them, it mostly finds new ways to spend money. Test it, measure it against real leads and sales, and decide with data.
